I came across this thing called Magnet Fishing a couple of weeks ago, and I think it’s the perfect fit for me. It’s a hobby that’s a combination of environmentalism and treasure hunting. I’ve loved treasure hunting since I was a kid, and let’s be honest, every time I see any of the National Treasure movies on TV I have to stop and watch it.
I fucking love being out on my kayak. I love paddling to new places and checking out the nature all around me. Looking for animals and habitats I may have only read about in school. The serenity of being on the water, with no one else around and having the ability to just relax.
But I’m also a Squirrel* and can only relax for so long out on the water. I always kinda wanted an activity to do while paddling (other than picking up the garbage I find — I definitely just went on a side quest looking at collapsible garbage cans to bring along on my next trip so I can contain more garbage) but I was definitely not a fisherman.
Enter Magnet Fishing. This was easy, cheap start up, compact and totally perfect paddling adjacent activity! I spend a lot of time when I’m out on the water looking to the bottom of the clearest parts, always on the lookout for treasures of any kind. This will be the perfect compliment.
I’ve got a couple sites bookmarked about what type of magnet and what kind of rope to get, but that’s literally it. Two things to get started.
I’m thinking about all the cool things I could find, or even just feeling good DOING something while I’m out on the water!
*Squirrel is the loving nickname given to us neurodivergent folks (my ADHD) by my partner Kate.
